Monday and Tuesday's (August 2 and 3) Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN) fixtures will run under strict COVID-19 protocols next week to enable matches to take place in the southeast of Queensland state after a snap lockdown was imposed.

Eleven areas are under a strict three-day lockdown, which began at 4pm AEST yesterday (July 31) and is expected to last until 4pm AEST on Tuesday (August 3).

Fixtures in the SSN due to be held in the state early next week were in doubt as the Queensland Government confirmed professional sport could not be played under the restrictions.

However, it has been agreed to allow the matches to go ahead with mitigating measures following discussions with the league.

The match between the Adelaide Thunderbirds and the Melbourne Vixens on Monday (August 2) will be played behind closed doors.

The Sunshine Coast Lightning against GIANTS Netball and the West Coast Fever against the Collingwood Magpies on the following day will also all be played behind closed doors.

They will all take place at the Nissan Arena in southern Brisbane.

Players will also be tested for COVID-19 on a daily basis, masks must be worn by all those not playing and the number of personnel attending matches will be reduced.

The chief executive of Netball Australia, Kelly Ryan, issued her thanks to the state Government for its flexibility and is confident the fixtures can be held safely.

"I’d like to thank the Queensland Government for allowing these matches to go ahead under the strictest of protocols," she said.

"Our teams have been abiding by stay-at-home restrictions since July and we are very aware of our obligation to protect the broader Queensland community.

"We have proven that we can play safely and these additional measures provide further reassurance to the Queensland Government and community."

The final round of fixtures in the SSN is also scheduled for next week after restrictions in Queensland are due to be lifted.

Two will take place at the Nissan Arena on Wednesday (August 4) and two at the USC Stadium on the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Sippy Downs campus in Queensland.

Australia introduced harsh restrictions at the start of the pandemic and has recorded a relatively low number of cases and deaths, with 34,381 confirmed cases and 924 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

However, an outbreak of the Delta variant has prompted the Queensland Government to introduce lockdown measures.
