Defending champions Germany opened the Women's Fistball World Championship in Grieskirchen with back-to-back wins.

The Germans - seeking a fourth title in a row - beat Chile in straight sets first up, with an 11-1, 11-5, 11-6 scoreline telling a story of German dominance.

It was not so simple against the host nation, however, with Austria winning the first set.

Germany fought back and a 7-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-7 win left them top of Group A.

Austria beat Switzerland in straight sets, while the Swiss inflicted the same fate on Chile.

Chile and then Switzerland had been due to host this event, but it was twice relocated for COVID-19 reasons.

Serbia are top of Group B via straight-sets wins over the Czech Republic and Denmark.

The Danes and Czechs both enjoyed straight-sets wins over Belgium, however, and their match tomorrow will likely decide who finishes the group second.

The top in Group B qualify for the quarter-finals, where they face the third- and fourth-place finishers from opposing group.

The top two in Group A go straight to the semi-finals.

Four group matches and the quarter-finals are scheduled tomorrow in Grieskirchen, where spectators are able to attend the tournament.
