Almost DKK200,000 (£22,890/$31,790/€26,890) has been raised to aid Parasport Denmark’s preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games through a scheme centred on pillows.

For every WELLPUR pillow purchased at Danish retailer JYSK in June, DKK10 (£1.14/$1.59/€1.34) was donated to the team's preparations.

A total of 19,487 pillows manufactured JYSK’s in-house brand were purchased last month, meaning that Denmark’s preparations for the Paralympics were boosted to the tune of DKK 194,870 (£22,310/$30,980/€26,200).

This builds on more than DKK 300,000 (£34,340/$47,690/€40,330) raised by the retail chain last year, after the Paralympics were postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Four-time world Para taekwondo champion Lisa Kjær Gjessing and three-time Paralympic athletics medallist Daniel Wagner are set to be the country’s flagbearers at the Games’ Opening Ceremony.

Denmark has won one gold medal at each of the last two Paralympic Games.

Peter Rosenmeier triumphed in the men’s singles C6 table tennis class at Rio 2016 to earn his second Paralympic gold, with his first coming at Beijing 2008.

The team’s Chef de Mission is Nicklas Bjaaland.

The 2020 Paralympics Games are being held from August 24 to September 5.
