People living in the host region can now apply for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games tickets in an exclusive ballot.

Local people have been given the first opportunity to register for seats at next year's event, and have until July 30 to do so.

The offer covers Birmingham and the West Midlands as well as Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

More than one million tickets will be available for Birmingham 2022, with every single session having seats on offer for £22 ($30/€25).

Under-16 tickets will start at just £8 ($11/€9) for some events, while the cheapest adult tickets will be £15 ($21/€17).

The main ticket ballot will begin in September for what organisers have billed as the "Games for Everyone".

Birmingham 2022 marked the launch of the local ballot by unveiling a refurbished basketball court in the city's Summerfield Park.

It has been designed by England player Kofi Josephs and local graffiti artist Zuke, who painted a bespoke, colourful mural onto the court.

The space aims to inspire participation in sport and is part of Birmingham 2022's legacy efforts as organisers work to leave a lasting impact.

"Birmingham 2022 is a once in a lifetime opportunity for residents of the West Midlands, with the Games being held, essentially, in their backyard," said Matt Kidson, Birmingham 2022's director of sport.

"We want to make sure that everyone who lives locally has a chance to experience the Games, through volunteering, spectating or soaking up the festival atmosphere - that's why we are launching a priority access ticket sale today for people with a West Midlands postcode.

"This is your chance to experience the biggest sporting event to be held in the UK for a decade."

Birmingham 2022 is scheduled between July 28 and August 8 next year, and boasts the biggest sport programme ever seen at a Commonwealth Games.

There will be 286 sessions across 19 sports, including eight Para-sports.

"The Commonwealth Games in Birmingham is going to be an absolutely phenomenal spectacle, and we want as many people as possible from across the West Midlands to enjoy the world-class sport and soak in the atmosphere," said West Midlands Mayor Andy Street.

Ian Ward, the leader of Birmingham City Council, added: "With the opening of the priority ticket ballot, Birmingham 2022 is firmly within our sights on the horizon.

"I am delighted the people of Birmingham will be amongst those getting the first opportunity to buy tickets for 11 days of fantastic sporting action, taking place at a range of superb locations in their city and further afield.

"The Games will show off the best of Birmingham as the proud host city and this is your chance to secure your attendance at the largest event to be staged in our history."
