Alexander Schwarzman and Matrena Nogovitsyna of Russia have been crowned the respective men's and women's winners of the World Draughts Championship following the final day of competition in Tallinn in Estonia.

Schwarzman claimed his fifth world title in international draughts, having last won the Championship in 2017.

His first came in 1998.

Schwarzman remained undefeated during the entire competition, first winning three and drawing six to finish second in Group D and qualify for the final.

He won three and drew eight in the final round to finish on 14 points.

Only Cameroon's Christian Niami was able to score a victory in the final round, defeating Wouter Sipma of The Netherlands to move up two places into seventh.

Schwarzman's compatriot Alexander Getmanski won silver after finishing one point behind him, while Dutch player Roel Boomstra claimed bronze.

In the women's competition, Nogovitsyna won by two points with nine wins and six draws.

She drew with Latvia's Elena Chesnokova in the final round to confirm the win with 24 points, with compatriot Tamara Tanyskkuzhina leapfrogging Ukraine's Viktoriya Motrichko for silver on the last day of competition.

Six-time world champion Tanyskkuzhina's win over Darja Fedorovich of Belarus was enough to move her onto 22 points with Motrichko, who took silver due to her eight wins to the Ukrainian's seven.

Motrichko ended her tournament with a draw against fourth-placed Natalia Sadowska of Poland.

Victory handed Nogovitsyna her first world title after finishing runner-up in 2011.
