Kenya's Lengen Lolurrentaru and Joyce Muthoni Njeru won the men's and women's races respectively on the second leg of the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) Mountain Running World Cup at the Grossglockner Berglauf event in Austria.

Lolurrentaru took on the ascent of 1,265 metres over 13 kilometres to win in 1 hour 11min 48sec, reaching the peak near Austria's highest mountain, Grossglockner.

He was neck-and-neck with German Filimon Abraham for the first two thirds of the race, before pulling away in the final stages to win by 46 seconds.

More than a minute behind Abraham was local favourite Manuel Innerhofer, who crossed the line for bronze just three seconds in front of a second Kenyan, Geoffrey Gikuni Ndungu.

Italy's Cesare Maestri was fifth in front of Slovenian Timotej Becan in sixth.

Irishman Zak Hanna was eighth, having finished between two Italians - Alex Baldaccini and Lorenzo Cagnati.

Henri Aymonod of Italy completed the top 10 in that same group just in front of Kenya's Eric Muthomi Riungu.

Kenya swept the podium in the women's race led by Njeru, rewarded for a cautious start to overtake compatriot Purity Kajuju Gitonga for gold in 1:23:46.

Gitonga was 24 seconds behind, but suffered compared to Njeru due to an energetic start.

Despite this, she was minutes clear of the third Kenyan Murigi Lucy Wambui, who was over four minutes behind the winner.

Finland's Susanna Saapunki was a distance behind all three in fourth, and there were sizeable gaps back to Lorenza Beccaria of Italy and Mojca Koligar of Slovenia in fifth and sixth.

In a much tighter pack, the top 10 was completed by Italians Alice Gaggi and Camilla Magliano, Czech Republic's Adela Stranska and Britain's Charlotte Morgan.
