England reached their first-ever UEFA European Championship final after defeating Denmark 2-1 on a nervous night at Wembley Stadium in London.

Playing on home soil, England came from behind after conceding a goal for the first time in the tournament, to triumph and secure a place in the Euro 2020 final against Italy at the same venue on Sunday (July 11).

The Danes, who won this tournament in 1992, took the lead from a brilliant free kick from Mikkel Damsgaard on the half-hour mark, the first goal England had let in during 480 minutes of football in the tournament.

Ten minutes later England were level when Simon Kjaer put a cross from Bukayo Saka into his own net to make it 1-1.

England dominated proceedings in the second half with Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel producing some good saves to keep them at bay.

This forced the contest into extra time, with the crucial moment coming late in the first period when the officials judged that Joakim Maehle had fouled Raheem Sterling.

England captain Harry Kane was tasked with converting the crucial penalty, and was fortunate when his weak effort, saved by Schmeichel, fell back to his feet to allow him to score the rebound and make it 2-1.

Victory means England are into a first major tournament final in men’s football since the 1966 World Cup, which they went on to win, also at Wembley Stadium.

For Denmark, the loss ended an emotional journey for a country that lost its first two games of the tournament and saw talismanic midfielder Christian Eriksen suffer a cardiac arrest on the pitch while playing in the nation’s opening game against Finland.

Lying in wait for England in the Euro 2020 final will be the Azzurri, who last night sealed their place on penalties against Spain, to continue their quest for a second European Championship title in their history, with their previous win coming in 1968.
