Defending champions United States maintained their 100 per cent record in the International Basketball Federation Under-19 World Cup in Latvia as they reached the quarter-finals with a 132-60 victory over South Korea at the Olympic Sports Center in Riga.

Canada also kept a perfect record as they beat Puerto Rico 86-56 at the Daugavpils Olympic Center.

The United States' opponents in a round of matches that will now switch to the Arena Riga will be Spain, who earned their place with an 86-73 win over Australia, with Ruben Dominguez contributing 24 points.

Senegal made the last eight at the expense of the hosts, whom they beat 57-44 at Daugavpils, with Babacar Sane top-scoring with 17.

France won the first of the day’s eight matches, defeating Mali 86-52 at the Olympic Sports Center in Riga, with Jayson Tchiamboud contributing 14 points, while Mohamed Sibide top-scored for their opponents with 13.

The French team’s opponents in tomorrow’s quarter-final will be Lithuania, who earned a 96-53 win over Iran at the Daugavpils Olympic Center.

Hubertas Pivorius top-scored for Lithuania with 17 points, and Iran’s Ali Shahryari scored 13.

Serbia became the third team to maintain a 100 per cent record as they reached the last eight after a highly competitive match against Japan at Daugavpils, winning 89-86, with Nikola Jovic making a spectacular contribution of 28 points.

Ibu Yamazaki scored 23 points for Japan.

The Serbian’s quarter-final opponents will be Argentina, who had an equally tight round-of-16 match against Turkey, coming through 76-74 with Gonzalo Corbolan contributing 25 points.

The playoffs for the 9th-16th placings, which will all take place at the Olympic Sports Center in Riga, will see Iran playing Mali, Japan meeting Turkey, Australia playing Puerto Rico and the hosts meeting Korea.

The semi-final rounds will take place on Friday (July 9), with all the final placing matches scheduled for Sunday (July 11).
