Sweden have now won all three gold medals at the event ©WOC 2021

Sweden were victorious in the sprint relay on the second day of competition at the World Orienteering Championships in Doksy in the Czech Republic.

The team of Tove Alexandersson, Emil Svensk, Gustav Bergman and Sara Hagström looked in control from the first leg to win the gold medal.

On leg one, Alexandersson finished 19 seconds ahead of Simona Aebersold of Switzerland after both pulled out a sizable gap to the rest of the field which, was led by Czech athlete Jana Knapova and Estonia's Annika Rihma.

The top two maintained first and second on the first men's leg, with Svensk extending the Sweden lead to more than 30 seconds.

Britain's Ralph Street had one of the race's best legs after stretching far ahead of the remaining chasers to put his side into a clear third and on the tail of the top two, with Denmark and the Czechs in fourth and fifth.

The lead was extended again on the third leg, with the men going again.


Bergman pushed on to put the gold medal within his team's grasp, while Martin Hubmann kept Switzerland in the silver-medal position.

Norway's Kasper Harlem Fosser had a fantastic leg to leapfrog a struggling Peter Hodkinson of Britain and move his team into third.

Hagström then maintained the lead to ease Sweden to the win by more than a minute, while Norway's Andrine Benjaminsen moved her team into silver ahead of Switzerland's Elena Roos - pushing ahead in the final stages.

Denmark and Britain completed the top five.

Following men's and women's sprint victories for Isac von Krusenstierna and Alexandersson yesterday, Sweden have now won all three gold medals at the event.
