British and German teams are not travelling to Russia because of COVID-19 quarantine restrictions.

The 2020 edition of the European Championships was due to take place in Budapest before being cancelled over the health crisis.

The last edition of the competition to be held took place in Bath in Britain in 2019, when the host nation topped the medals table.

Competition in Russia is set to start tomorrow with the women's relay, ending next Sunday (July 11). 

Seven events are being contested.

These are individual, team and relay disciplines for men and women as well as a mixed relay.

Britain's Jamie Cooke and Lithuania's London 2012 Olympic champion Laura Asadauskaite are the reigning men's and women's individual champions from 2019.

Lithuania is one of 17 nations expected to compete at the European Championships, although Cooke will be absent.

As Britain won five of the seven gold medals on offer in 2019, plenty of new champions will be crowned in Nizhny Novgorod.

Alexander Lifanov and Maxim Kuznetsov, who won the men's relay world title as "neutral" athletes earlier this year, headline Russia's team.
