Netball Australia is being forced to make changes to its calendar because of the worsening coronavirus situation in the country.

The Suncorp Super Netball League is in the process of relocating four clubs to Melbourne to ensure round nine can go ahead, it has been announced.

The decision was made for the NSW Swifts, GIANTS Netball, the Queensland Firebirds and the Sunshine Coast Lightning to travel to Victoria for at least two weeks to safeguard the season.

New South Wales is currently in state-wide lockdown which is not due to end until July 9 after authorities detected the Delta variant - the strain of COVID-19 which originated in India.

Netball Australia has also been forced to cancel the 2021 National Netball Championships in Hobart and which was due to start next Sunday (July 4) and last until July 11.

The decision was made based on the relevant health advice, with the safety of all participants and the wider community the priority, Netball Australia announced.

Tasmania has introduced strict travel restrictions to try to control the spread of the virus.

Netball Australia's executive general manager of performance, Stacey West, said it was a difficult but necessary decision to cancel the event.

"This is certainly not the position we hoped to be in, and we can only imagine the disappointment and frustration of our players, coaches and umpires," West said.

"I’d like to thank Netball Tasmania, who have worked so hard to deliver an exceptional event experience, only to have the event cancelled for the second consecutive year.

"Unfortunately, the unpredictability and instability of the coronavirus pandemic isn’t going away, and our priority is always the safety of our participants."

The National Netball Championships normally provide emerging talent from across the country the opportunity to represent their respective state or territory and compete for the championship title in under-17 and under-19 age groups.
