Olympic gold medallists Fiji claimed a potentially decisive victory over world champions New Zealand to boost their chances of lifting the men's title at the Oceania Sevens Championships in Townsville.

Fiji edged out the World Cup holders 21-19 on their way to preserving their 100 per cent start to the tournament at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

The Pacific islanders later beat Australia 19-7 to earn their fourth straight victory.

Fiji, chasing a fifth Oceania Championship, are top of the standings heading into tomorrow's final day.

New Zealand - who have never won the event - are in still in contention after defeating the Oceania Barbarians side, comprised of contracted Australian players and members of the Uni Sevens squad, 21-17.

The Barbarians were also beaten 28-12 by defending champions Australia.

New Zealand, the reigning women's world and Commonwealth Games champions, have four wins from four after the second day of action in the women's competition.

The Black Ferns Sevens thrashed Olympic gold medallists Australia 34-5 before sealing a similarly dominant 34-7 win over the Oceania Women's Sevens team.

Fiji also recorded two victories, overcoming the Oceania team 21-12 before earning an impressive 21-12 victory against the hosts.

The highest ranked nation after all six matches have been completed in the men's and women's events will be declared champions.

Australia have won five of the 10 women’s tournaments, including the last two in 2018 and 2019.
