The International Swimming Federation (FINA) has approved rules on the protection from harassment and abuse, which the governing body claims will help enhance safety for athletes.

The rules were approved by the FINA Bureau on June 5 following consultation with athletes, medical professionals and various other stakeholders.

"As stated in my inaugural speech in Doha, we must focus our attention on the interests of our athletes and in the protection of their integrity," said FINA President Husain Al-Musallam.

"The health and safety of our athletes is paramount in our strategy."

FINA said the document seeks to ensure a positive, healthy and fulfilling experience for all participants in its events.

The governing body said the rules will serve as the foundation for athlete safety, well-being and prevention of harassment and abuse.

The document outlines definitions of forbidden conduct, including harassment, hazing, neglect, psychological and physical abuse, sexual harassment and sexual assault.

The rules also seek to create standards that set boundaries between professional and athlete members and mandatory reporting.

FINA said the document establishes a structure for investigation of complaints and their underlying circumstances, as well as promoting greater accountability and compliance.

The rules are harmonised with the 2016 International Olympic Committee consensus statement on harassment and abuse in sport.

FINA said all Member Federations must adopt similar regulations or incorporate them into their own rules.

The rules can be modified appropriately for national-level competition and respective jurisdictions.

FINA plans to organise live sessions on its learning platform and develop resources such as toolkits and model rules to assist its members.
