A strong second day of competition saw Germany’s world 2017 decathlon bronze medallist Kai Kazmirek earn victory at the World Athletics Combined Events Challenge on his home turf of Ratingen.

The 30-year-old, who already had the Olympic qualifying mark of 8,350 points, underlined his readiness for the impending Tokyo 2020 Olympics as he amassed 8,184.

Meanwhile Germany’s 23-year-old world champion Niklas Kaul, who also has the qualifying mark from the Doha World Championships in 2019, failed to complete the last two events.

Kazmirek led a home sweep of the first four places, with Mathias Brugger strengthening his hopes of earning a Tokyo place as he took second position with 8080, concluding by taking more than three seconds off his 1500 metres personal best as he clocked 4min 20.45sec.

Overnight leader Andreas Bechmann finished third on 7955.

Jannis Wolf was fourth with 7831.

Canada’s Georgia Ellenwood won the heptathlon with 6314 points, with second place going to Odile Ahouansanou of Benin on 6274 and Austria’s Verena Mayr taking third place on 6254.
