French taekwondo players are set to train in Shizuoka City prior to competing at the delayed Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The French Taekwondo Federation (FFTDA) confirmed it had reached an agreement with officials in Shizuoka to house the taekwondo team for its pre-Olympic camp.

The 15-strong delegation, which includes athletes, coaches and medical staff, will train in the city from July 8 to 19, with the Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony due to take place on July 23.

According to the FFTDA, they will be placed "in a very strict health bubble" and will not come into contact with any locals in Shizuoka.

"The safety and protection of the population and of the athletes are indeed at the heart of all discussions," the FFTDA said.

The FFTDA had initially looked to set up its training camp in Yamanashi, before deciding on Shizuoka.

Shizuoka, located around 181 kilometres southwest of the Japanese capital, is among the areas that are scheduled to host athletes for training camps in the lead-up to Tokyo 2020.

At least 40 of the 500 planned host towns have abandoned plans to house athletes before the Games due to COVID-19 concerns.

Track cycling is among the sports set to be held in Shizuoka Prefecture during the Games.

France has won seven medals in taekwondo at the Olympics.

Taekwondo events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are scheduled to be held at the Makuhari Messe from July 24 to 27.
