The FIB announced new dates for the Men's Bandy World Championship in February, after the event was called off last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

This year’s World Championship at Irkutsk in Russia was confirmed to take place between October 11 and 17.

A Russian team, Sweden, Finland, the United States, Norway, Kazakhstan, Estonia and Germany are set to compete.

The World Championship in Syktyvkar, which had been scheduled for 2021, was moved to 2022.

Dates of March 27 to April 3 have been allocated for the event next year.

Both dates fall within the window of the two-year CAS decision on the Russian Anti-Doping Agency case.

Russia is banned from hosting major events such as World Championships for two years under sanctions levied against the country by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The ruling said Russia should be stripped of any events it already has the right to host "unless it is legally or practically impossible to do so".

The FIB announced both events have been classed as exceptions.

WADA has confirmed the decision, citing the postponement of the 2020 event to 2021 and the lack of interest and facilities in other nations to host the World Championships among the reasons.

"WADA has established a robust monitoring process regarding IFs [International Federations] World Championships taking place in Russia in 2021 and 2022," a WADA spokesperson told insidethegames.

"IFs are asked to provide extensive information and documentation as it relates to the ‘legal’ and ‘practical’ aspects of the event at stake, including but not limited to: date of granting of the event, other nations that originally bid to host the event or hosted previous editions, stage of preparations (for example, venues built or being renovated), contracts, ease of re-assigning to another country given the size and/or timing of the event, financial or operational risks for the IF, etc.

"Having carefully reviewed the submission from the Federation of International Bandy, WADA, with the support of external legal counsel and the Agency’s independent Compliance Review Committee, considered that the event could be maintained as planned without breaching the CAS Award.

"In particular, WADA took into account the fact that the 2021 bandy world championships were postponed from 2020 due to COVID-19, coupled with the lack of demonstrated interest and facilities from other nations to host these world championships of a sport that is played in a limited number of countries worldwide (it must be noted that four of the last six bandy world championships were held in Russia).

"In addition, significant work has already been carried out on the construction and renovation of venues.

"WADA continues to monitor the implementation of the CAS decision in its entirety.

"While several IFs have re-assigned or postponed events awarded to Russia and covered by the CAS ruling, WADA is following up with a number of other IFs that have not done so and have not yet provided compelling evidence that maintaining their event in Russia would not violate the CAS decision.

"These cases may result in the opening of a compliance procedure under the International Standard for Code Compliance by Signatories."
