Hungary produced a second surprise at the International Swimming Federation Women's Water Polo World League Super Final in Greece as they defeated unbeaten Canada to earn a place in the gold-medal match against defending champions the United States.

Rita Kezthelyi contributed four goals as Hungary, who won only one of their group matches, built on the previous day’s defeat of European champions Spain to earn a 14-10 victory over the Group A winners.

Hungary took the first three quarters 4-3, 3-2 and 6-4 before drawing 1-1 in the final quarter.

Earlier, Rio 2016 gold medallists the US maintained their unbeaten run at the Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre with a 17-8 win over Rio 2016 bronze medallists Russia to reach the final.

Like Hungary, the Americans were never behind in their semi-final, winning the first three quarters 5-3, 4-0, 4-1 before finishing 4-4 in the final quarter.

Tomorrow's final will be a rematch of the Rio 2016 semi-final which the US won 14-10.

Earlier in the day, Greece and Spain advanced to tomorrow’s fifth-place playoff.

Greece earned a 17-5 win over Japan, while Spain beat Kazakhstan 20-8.

Japan and Kazakhstan will start tomorrow’s programme with the seventh-place playoff.
