Finland beat Denmark 1-0 at UEFA Euro 2020, in a match overshadowed by a medical emergency that caused the game to be suspended for nearly two hours.

Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen appeared to collapse as a throw-in was taken towards him in the 43rd minute of the Group B game in Copenhagen.

Television pictures showed medical staff appearing to give Eriksen CPR during lengthy treatment on the pitch.

Due to the nature of the incident, the match was suspended at 0-0 with Eriksen taken to hospital, where he was later reported to be in a stable condition.

After a request by players from both teams, the match resumed with Finland taking the lead on the hour mark as Joel Pohjanpalo headed in a cross from Jere Uronen to give the tournament debutants the lead.

Denmark had a chance to level the contest after being awarded a penalty on 75 minutes but Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s weak spot-kick was saved by Lukas Hradecky.

Elsewhere in the group the world's top ranked team Belgium showed why they are among the favourites for the tournament as they comfortably beat Russia 3-0 in Saint Petersburg.

Romelu Lukaku, a team mate of Eriksen's at Inter Milan in Italy, gave Belgium the lead on ten minutes when he clinically finished a cross from Dries Mertens.

Belgium doubled their advantage just after the half hour when substitute Thomas Meunier fired in after Russian keeper Anton Shunin could not keep hold of Thorgen Hazard's cross.

A second composed finish from Lukaku with two minutes remaining added comfort to the scoreline for Belgium, who top the group with Finland on three points after the opening round of matches.

In the day's other match, in Group A, Wales and Switzerland drew 1-1 in a fixture played in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Switzerland had the better of the first half but failed to convert some good chances ensuring the contest was deadlocked at the break.

Five minutes after halftime Switzerland made their dominance count with Breel Embolo powerfully heading in a Xherdan Shaqiri corner.

Wales earned a share of the spoils with 15 minutes remaining when Kieffer Moore created space to glance in Joe Morrell's cross and make the final score 1-1.

Italy lead Group A on three points after the opening round of games, following their 3-0 victory over Italy last night.
