The Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) has announced details of a week of activities in the run-up to Olympic Day.

The week of activities features the opportunity to learn a new sport - with a host of National Federations giving members of the public the opportunity to engage with and try out different sports throughout the week.

The second scheduled activity is a virtual week-long walk between June 21 and 25 where participants are encouraged to walk the longest distance possible, with prizes on offer to those who manage the furthest.

In order to raise awareness of environmental issues, a tree planting activity is taking place to highlight the part this can play in reducing global warming.

The trees will be planted to recognise individuals who have made contributions to sport in Barbados.

The culmination of the celebrations is set for June 26, with the BOA hosting a virtual two kilometre run, where participants can run with an Olympian.

Olympians will aim to garner support from the public to register to run alongside them, with the Olympian with the most support declared as the winner.

A donation to a charity of the Olympian’s choice will be made, while there will also be a prize for the National Federation with the most participants completing the run.

Olympic Day was launched in 1987 by the International Olympic Committee Sport for All Commission, and is designed as an annual worldwide celebration of the Olympic Movement, while also acting as a way of promoting sport and a healthy and active lifestyle in general.
