Britain's Kim Daybell started his campaign to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics with two wins on the opening day of the Paralympic Table Tennis World Qualification Tournament in Laško in Slovenia.

In the men's singles class 10, Daybell defeated Austria's Gustav Wiesenhofer 11-5, 11-9, 11-5 in straight games before defeating Thailand's Bunpot Sillapakong 17-5, 11-5, 11-8 to top Group D.

Daybell is one of the favourites to qualify for the Games, having reached the quarter-finals at the Rio 2016 Paralympics and later winning silver at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Elsewhere in the group, Germany's Mio Wagner defeated Sillapakong in five games 11-8, 11-9, 4-11, 8-11, 11-9, but later lost to Wiesenhofer 10-12, 11-4, 11-7, 11-8.

In Group A, Poland's Igor Misztal won both of his matches - first winning 11-7, 11-8, 5-11, 11-2 against the Czech Republic's Tibor Chmela, before beating Italy's Lorenzo Cordua 11-9, 11-7, 11-7.

France's Gilles De La Bourdonnaye is top of Group B following two victories - first against Algeria's Karim Boumedouha 11-1, 11-4, 9-11, 11-4, and then Japan's Nariaki Kakita 11-8, 11-8, 11-6.

Montenegro's Luka Bakic won both his matches in Group C, first defeating Iraq's Abdulrahman Hikmat Shafeeq 6-11, 11-3, 15-13, 11-8, and then Brazil's Claudio Massad 11-7, 11-4, 11-9.

Chinese Taipei's Jin Sian Su finished the first day in Group E with two wins too, with the first being a five game thriller against Jerry Vasquez, coming from two down to win 11-13, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-1.

He then defeated Russian Pavel Lukyanov 11-3, 11-5, 8-11, 13-11.

Elsewhere in the group, Lukyanov defeated Chile's Gustavo Ignacio Castro Serrano 11-8, 11-4, 11-6, while Vasquez won 11-8, 11-8, 11-7 against the Chilean.
