A date has been set for Algerian Olympic Committee's (COA) Presidential election - and incumbent Abderrahmane Hammad is to face at least one challenger.

An ordinary General Meeting held yesterday in Algiers put in place the necessary measures for a vote to take place on June 8.

Financial accounts for 2020 were also approved.

Following the meeting, Abdelhakim Boughadou, President of the Algerian Swimming Federation, threw his hat into the ring to lead the COA.

"After consultations with members of our federal office and with the Presidents of some Olympic and non-Olympic federations, I decided to run for the Presidency of the Algerian Olympic committee," Boughadou said, as reported by the state-owned Algeria Press Service.

"The main lines of my programme revolve around issues related to restructuring, supervision, management, review of bonuses allocated to National Federations and high-level athletes, as well as other points that I will discuss during my next meetings with the press."

Olympic high jump medallist Hammad only became COA President in September 2020, after International Olympic Committee member Mustapha Berraf quit.

Berraf still leads the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, winning a second term as President earlier this month.

Mabrouk Kerboua, the former head of the Algerian Cycling Federation, and Soumia Fergan, a campaigner for women's rights in sport in Algeria, also stood in September's COA election, but were soundly beaten by Hammad, a Sydney 2000 bronze medallist.

The winner this time will serve a four-year term which will include the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as well as Tokyo 2020.
