Switzerland ended Slovakia’s three-match winning streak with a sensational 8-1 victory at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Men’s World Championship in Riga.

Patrick Fischer’s team cashed in with five power-play goals as Switzerland bounced back from their 7-0 defeat to Sweden in a clinical fashion at the Olympic Sports Centre in the Latvian capital.

The floodgates opened inside 10 minutes when Raphael Diaz netted before Switzerland struck three times in the second period.

Sven Andrighetto, Romain Loeffel and Gregory Hoffmann got on the scoresheet to give the Swiss team a 4-0 lead.

Switzerland refused to take their foot off the gas as Timo Meier and Philipp Kurashev joined the scoring party.

Michal Kristof got Slovakia off the mark only for Hoffmann and Loeffel to complete their braces and round off a scintillating showing.

"We all know how good we can be when we play like that," said Loeffel whose side have climbed to second in Group A behind ROC.

"Winning the first two games and then losing against Sweden, we kept our confidence.

"It's not because we lost against Sweden that we lost everything.

"We know what we are capable of doing on the ice. And now we're going to keep going for the next games."

The Czech Republic came from 2-0 down to defeat Sweden in Group A courtesy of a stunning final period.

Looking to back up their thrashing of Switzerland, Sweden picked up from where they left off against the Czech Republic.

Goals from Andreas Wingerli and Rickard Rakell inside the first 15 minutes gave Sweden a huge boost.

But Jakub Vrana sparked a fightback when he scored on 41 minutes before Jan Kovar levelled matters on 45 minutes.

All the momentum was with the Czech team as Lukas Klok put his side in front before Jakub Flek sealed victory on 58 minutes.

Defending champions Finland moved to the top of Group B after a comfortable 3-0 win over Italy.

Tony Sund led the way with two goals while Arttu Ruotsalainen grabbed the other at the Arena Riga as Finland climbed one point above Germany.

"Of course, it feels good to get my first two goals but the main thing is we got the win and the three points," said Sund.

"We have a couple of tough games still left before the playoff games start.

"We have to finish this group in a good way and get our focus on the end games."

The oldest player on the United States team and the youngest got on the scoresheet as they clinched a crucial 4-2 win over Latvia in Group B.

Brian Boyle, 36, and Matty Beniers, 18, scored for the US while Matt Tennyson and Trevor Moore also netted.

Both of Latvia’s goals came in the first period with Miks Indrasis and Renars Krastenbergs scoring to draw level at 2-2, but the US found an extra gear to secure a win that lifts them up to third.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow.
