Sweden claimed their first victory of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship by thrashing Switzerland at the Olympic Sports Centre in Latvian capital Riga.

Sweden took a 2-0 lead in the Group A match thanks to goals from Jesper Froden and Adrian Kempe within the first 10 minutes.

They added a third early in the second period through Victor Olofsson and a fourth through Froden 30 minutes into the game.

Magnus Nygren, Nils Lundkvist and Henrik Tommernes all joined the act as Sweden finished 7-0 victors.

Denmark defeated Britain in overtime to claim a win that elevates them into knockout-rounds contention, winning 3-2.

Ben O'Connor opened the scoring for the British team within three minutes, but the Danes took a 2-1 lead by the end of the first period due to goals from Julian Jakobsen and Nicklas Jensen.

After an uneventful second period, Mike Hammond equalised fewer than four minutes from the end of the game - taking it to overtime. 

But there would be no comeback story for the Britons, after Markus Lauridsen scored to give Denmark the victory.

For being level after regulation time, Britain do earn a first point of the event.

The United States claimed an expected victory in Group B, defeating dark horses Kazakhstan 3-0.

Adam Clendening opened the scoring within seven minutes and Trevor Moore added a second early into the second period.

Within two minutes of the third period, Jack Drury completed the scoring.

In the group's late game, Finland recovered from a penalty shoot-out defeat against Kazakhstan to beat Norway 5-2.

Norwegian Mathis Olimb gave the underdogs the lead, but the reigning champions levelled the score before the end of the first period.

Anton Lundell and Kim Nousiainen made it 3-1 by the end of the second period, and Finland would extend their lead in the last 20 minutes.

Tobias Lindstrom had appeared get Norway back into the game, but Jere Innala and Hannes Bjorninen added two more goals for the Finns to ensure victory.

In tomorrow's matches at the IIHF World Championship, Denmark face ROC, Britain are up against Belarus, Norway face a Canadian test and Germany will meet Kazakhstan.
