The table tennis venue for the 2021 Summer World University Games in Chengdu has received praise after hosting the China University Table Tennis Championships.

Twenty-four teams and 178 players competed at the event at the Chengdu High Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium.

It was hosted by the China University Sports Association and Chengdu 2021 organisers, allowing the chance to test preparations for the Games across five days of play.

"I felt very shocked as soon as I walked in," said men's singles champion Xi Sheng of Wuhan University.

"Everyone said that after playing so many games and encountering such a luxurious venue for the first time, our game experience in the past week has been very good."

East China University of Science and Technology won the women's singles crown through Wang Xiaotong, and also the men's and women's team titles.

"Whether it is the athletes or the venue itself, this competition is considered a national military parade for college students," said the university's coach Ma Yuefei.

"Through this competition, we can also select outstanding athletes, prepare for the Universiade, and strive to renew glory at home next year."

The venue has space for more than 12,000 fans and measures in at 83,000 square metres.

After the World University Games, the venue will be used for a variety of different sports and will be able to be converted into the first basketball arena in Sichuan Province at NBA standard.

Volleyball, ice hockey, gymnastics and short track speed skating could also be held there.

Earlier this month, the International University Sports Federation confirmed new dates for Chengdu 2021 after the event was pushed into next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The action is now planned to take place between June 26 and July 7, with the dates avoiding the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

Eighteen sports are on the programme for the Games, which will be the third in China after the Summer Universiades in Beijing and Shenzhen in 2001 and 2011.
