Seventh seed Joelle King of New Zealand was surprisingly beaten as the third round of the El Gouna Squash Open got underway.

King lost in straight games 11-6, 12-10, 11-8 to Rowan Elaraby of Egypt as matches took place in the bottom half of the men’s and women’s third round draws.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw at the Professional Squash Association Platinum tournament second seed Nouran Gohar of Egypt won 11-9, 12-10, 11-7 against Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam.

All of today’s women’s matches were completed in straight games with fourth seed Amanda Sobhy of the United States triumphing 11-6, 11-7, 11-7 against England’s Lucy Turmel, while eighth seed Salma Hany of Egypt overcame Olivia Feichter of the US 11-3, 11-4, 11-6.

In the men’s draw the highest ranked player in action today was second seed Tarek Momen of Egypt, with the men’s world champion fighting hard to beat compatriot Mazen Hesham 12-10, 11-8, 11-4.

Third seed Paul Coll of New Zealand defeated France’s Victor Crouin 11-7, 11-3, 12-10 in the final game of the day on the Glass Court at the El Gouna Conference and Culture Centre.

In another all Egyptian affair fifth seed Karim Abdel Gawad battled to a 11-6, 15-13, 11-6 win over Karim El Hammamy in a contest that lasted 70 minutes.

The remaining men’s match was an all European affair between two unseeded players, with France’s Gregoire Marche coming from behind to defeat Germany’s Raphael Kandra 6-11, 11-3, 11-9, 11-9.

The matches in the top half of the men’s and women’s draws are scheduled to be played tomorrow, with men’s and women’s top seeds Mohamed ElShorbagy and Nour El Sherbini, both of Egypt, among the players in action.
