Kazakhstan secured two spots for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics today as the Asian Taekwondo Olympic Qualification Tournament in Amman in Jordan came to a close.

First, Asian Games bronze medallist Ruslan Zhaparov secured his spot at the Games with a win in the men's over-80-kilogram semi-finals, defeating Ali Akbar Amiri 31-20, who was representing the Refugee Olympic Team.

Joining him at the Olympics will be China's Sun Hongyi, who defeated Lebanon's Ray Rahy 31-9 in the other tie.

Cansel Deniz, who claimed Asian Games silver in 2018, gave Kazakhstan their second berth in the women's over-67kg following a 12-2 win over Turkmenistan's Mokhru Khalimova in the semi-finals.

Also qualifying in the weight category, Uzbekistan youngster Svetlana Osipova won 27-5 against the Philippines Kirstie Alora.

In the women's under-57kg, Asian Games bronze medallist Nahid Kiani of Iran secured her nation's only Olympic spot at the qualifiers, coming through two rounds. 

First, she defeated Thailand's Phannapa Harnsujin 18-16 and followed it up with a 4-2 win over Natali Hamaidi of Jordan in the semi-finals.

Lo Chia-ling of Chinese Taipei also qualified for Tokyo 2020, first beating Vietnam's Tran Thi Anh Tuyet 8-2 in the quarter-finals and then winning 21-11 against Lebanon's Laeticia Aoun in the semi-finals.

Finally, two-time world bronze medallist Ramnarong Sawekwiharee of Thailand ensured his qualification for the Games with two wins in the men's under-58kg.

He first defeated Marat Niyazov of Kyrgyzstan 55-4 in the quarter-finals, before beating Pakistan's Haroon Khan 32-26 in the semi-finals.

Joining him in Tokyo will be Kurt Barbosa of the Philippines following his 40-33 quarter-final win over Mongolia's Molomyn Tumenbayar, before he defeated Zaid Al-Halawani of Jordan by a single point in a high-scoring 50-49 bout.
