The first relay final was the mixed 4x50 metres medley, where Italy edged out Russia by 3.28sec and Spain finished third.

However, the Spaniards won the next race, the mixed 4x100m medley, seeing off France in a two-team final.

Italy won four gold medals in total today, with Antonio Fantin, Monica Boggioni and Arjola Trimi all victorious.

Fantin broke the men's S6 100m freestyle world record in the heats and then bettered it again in the final, stopping the clock at 1:min 03.76sec.

Trimi, a silver medallist at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, set a new European record of 1:31.46 in the women's S4 100m freestyle.

Israel's Ami Omer Dadaon set a new men's S4 100m freestyle world record to collect the gold medal - 1:19:77 - while in the men's S14 100m backstroke the Pan-American record was bettered.

Brazil's Gabriel Bandeira, one of a number of non-European swimmers using this open event to prepare for Tokyo 2020, achieved that feat.

There was also a quirky result in the men's S12 100m butterfly final as Dzmitry Salei - representing Belarus - won gold ahead of brother Raman, who earned a silver medal for Azerbaijan. 

The European Para Swimming Championships continue on the Portuguese island tomorrow.
