Nottingham University, which recently announced it would be opening a state-of-the-art esports venue, has been chosen to host this year's British Esports Championships.

Six finals are due to be played on July 3, although that date lands before the purpose-built esports venue is due to open, so the 400-seat Metronome will be used instead.

The British Esports Association (BEA) anticipates there will be a capacity limit in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the action will be streamed on Twitch.

Division 1 and Division 2 finals in League of Legends, Overwatch and Rocket League are due be contested at the British Esports Championships, which are open to school and college students aged 12 and above.

Coaching from some of Britain's leading professional esports teams will be on offer for the winners, as well as medals and jerseys, according to the BEA.

"We’re delighted to be bringing the British Esports Championships grand finals to a live venue once again," BEA chair Andy Payne said.

"It’s been two years since our finals were held at a physical event and we’re excited to get the students together to take part in what I’m sure will be another memorable finals.

"We’d also like to say a big thank you to Confetti for supplying the venue."

Confetti is the trade name for Nottingham University's creative technology department.

It made further strides into the esports sphere earlier this year when it announced Confetti X, a complex spearheaded by a 100-seat arena purpose-built for esports.

It will host amateur and professional esports tournaments, Confetti says, and also offer coaching facilities and the ability to stage other live events.

The complex is also due to include a green screen studio, the infrastructure to film and broadcast in 4K and an high-tech broadcast gallery, with the university hoping the facilities will also attract industry leaders and offer students a clear path into the upper echelons of esports and gaming.
