The 2022 World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Townsville in Australia are now due to be held in August, with thousands of athletes expected to participate.

August 18 to 28 is the new window for the event, which had been scheduled for 2021 before the coronavirus pandemic hit.

World Triathlon Multisport Championships could not be held last year, so the 2020 edition in Almere in The Netherlands was moved to 2021, and Townsville's hosting also deferred by a year.

All contest at the event will be in non-Olympic triathlon disciplines.

"We are delighted to return to Queensland, this time for one of our flagship events: the 5th edition of the Multisport World Championships in Townsville," said World Triathlon President Marisol Casado.

"Over the last years, Australia has become synonymous of triathlon on its multiple variations, and has proved to be a magnificent host for the triathlon family, playing host to some truly memorable performances and great champions, staging races the results of which have helped shape the path of entire seasons.

"Being able to hold these important races in one fantastic location and all under the banner of one festival has proved to be hugely beneficial for athletes, spectators and media alike, allowing the global World Triathlon family the opportunity to gather together for a true celebration of the sport, and we are extremely excited to head to Townsville in 2022."

The World Triathlon Multisport Championships made their debut on the World Triathlon calendar in 2017, with the inaugural event held in Penticton in Canada.

Further editions were then held in Fyn in Denmark in 2018 and Pontevedra in Spain in 2019.

The Spanish island of Ibiza is set to host the 2023 World Triathlon Multisport Championships.
