Dutch player Anish Giri kept the pressure on leader Ian Nepomniachtchi with just two rounds to go in the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Candidates Tournament, following a victory over the United States' Fabiano Caruana.

Giri's victory over the Italian-American in Yekaterinburg put him onto 7.5 points, making it a second win in a row.

Caruana's defeat left him two points behind the leader on six, with his match with Giri being one of the must-see clashes of the tournament.

He remains half a point behind the Russian Nepomniachtchi, who defeated China's Wang Hao to move onto eight.

Wang remains on five points.

France's Maxime Vachier-Lagrave moved back into third place following victory over Russia's Kirill Alekseenko and is now on 6.5 points.

Alekseenko is now bottom of the standings with 4.5 points.

China's Ding Liren moved off the bottom with a win over Alexander Grischuk of Russia, putting him onto five points, half a point behind his fallen opponent.

This was the first time that a FIDE Candidates Tournament round ended with all decisive finishes.

With tomorrow being a rest day, action is due to resume on Monday (April 26) with Nepomniachtchi facing Vachier-Lagrave and Giri playing Grischuk.
