The overnight three-point lead held by Croatia's Filip Jurišić disappeared on day three of the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) Vilamoura International Championship in Portugal, the European qualification event for Tokyo 2020.

Jurišić, who began the day with 11 points, maintained highly respectable form with a second and sixth place in yellow group racing, but his total of 19 points was matched by the Briton who had been three points behind him, Michael Beckett, who placed third and then second in the blue group.

And moving up ominously into third place, finishing on 20 points after a victory and second place in the yellow group, was Brazil’s Atlanta 1996 and Athens 2004 Olympic gold medallist Robert Scheidt.

Finland’s Kaarle Tapper, who won the opening race, is fourth on 25 points from Germany’s world champion Philipp Buhl and Hermann Tomasgaard of Norway who are a point behind.

In the women's laser radial, Denmark's Anne-Marie Rindom stretched her lead from seven points to eight over France’s Marie Barrue, even though each won one of the day’s two races.

With three wins from the first four races in the red group, Rindom - Rio 2016 bronze medallist and world champion in 2015 and 2019 - had taken a firm grip on the event, and she maintained her form with an 11th place that she was able to discard and a win that left her on 14 points.

Barrue earned her first victory in the green group and followed up with a discarded 30th place that left her second on 22 points.

A second place and fourth place finish in the red group enabled Japan’s Rio 2016 bronze medallist Manami Doi to move up to third place with 26 points, with Switzerland’s Maud Jayet, eighth and twelfth in the green group, lying fourth overall on 30.

Vasileia Karachaliou of Greece dropped from fourth to 15th after placing 11th and 21st in the red group.
