The traditional Classics season is set to begin when the Amstel Gold Race takes place on a revamped course in The Netherlands tomorrow.

Men's and women's races are scheduled to be held at the event in Valkenburg, which marks the transition to the Ardennes Classics races.

Cyclists will complete repeated laps of a 16.9 kilometres course, instead of the usual twisting route through Limburg, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The field for the men's race includes world champion Julian Alaphilippe of Deceuninck–Quick-Step and Jumbo-Visma's Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar.

Pogačar's Slovenian compatriot Primož Roglič is also expected to be in contention for victory at the International Cycling Union WorldTour event, alongside his team mate Wout van Aert of The Netherlands.

Dutch rider Mathieu van der Poel, a former winner of the Amstel Gold Race, is among the notable absentees as he is focusing his preparations on competing in mountain biking at the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

In the women's event, Olympic road race champion Anna van der Breggen of The Netherlands appears to have shrugged off injury concerns to make the start line.

The SD Worx rider will be bracing herself for competition from the likes of compatriot Marianne Vos of Jumbo-Visma and Britain's Lizzie Deignan of Trek-Segafredo.

The 2020 edition of the Amstel Gold Race was cancelled due to the global health crisis.
