Kenya’s Wilson Bii was among the winners on the opening day of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Tunis.

Bii emerged as the winner of the men’s T11 5,000 metres event at the Rades Athletics Stadium in the Tunisian city.

He completed the event in a winning time of 15min 56.20sec, with team-mate Erick Kiptoo Sang ending three seconds behind as the runner-up.

The podium was completed by Ecuador’s Darwin Gustavo Castro Reyes, who finished in 15:59.99.

Tunisia’s Walid Ktila earned two gold medals on the opening day of his home competition.

He triumphed in the T34 100m race, before securing victory in the 400m event.

Nada Béhi added to Tunisia’s medal haul by winning the men’s T37 400m competition, while Yassine Guennichi won the F36 shot put.

Ahmed Ben Mosbeh also triumphed for the hosts on the opening day, as he secured gold in the F37/38 shot put competition.

Competition in Tunis will continue tomorrow, with the event scheduled to conclude on Saturday (March 20).

The 14th edition of this event in Tunis is key for athletes seeking qualification for this summer’s rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, which are due to run from August 24 to September 5.

The Grand Prix season has been reduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After Tunis the Italian Open Championships are set to be held from April 16 to 18.

A meeting in Paris is scheduled from May 5 to 7, with the Para-athletics meet in Swiss venue Nottwil currently scheduled to conclude the season from May 14 to 16.

The 2021 European Championships, in Bydgoszcz in Poland, are timetabled for June 1 to 5 and stand as another important event in the run-up to Tokyo 2020.
