Cricket Hong Kong has partnered with gender equality initiative FairBreak Global to hold an invitational women’s Twenty20 tournament next month.

Six teams are expected to take part in the tournament from May 1 to 15.

The competition will be run in conjunction with Cricket Hong Kong, with the International Cricket Council having sanctioned the event.

"I cannot be prouder of the team at FairBreak and Cricket Hong Kong who have worked so diligently to bring this opportunity to the world," said Shaun Martyn, founder and managing director of FairBreak Global.

"I’m excited for the players, particularly for Associate Nation players, and those who have lacked opportunity and recognition in this sport to date.

"We must always have an equal playing field that rewards talent and aspiration."

FairBreak said the tournament will bring together players recruited from across the world.

The organisation said this will be in line with their aim of advancing gender equality on a global scale.

The tournament is privately funded, with healthcare group Gencor having been announced as the lead sponsor.

Organisers say the event marks significant progress in the development of women’s cricket.

The competition will mark a return of international cricket competition to Hong Kong.

Cricket Hong Kong had previously been forced to place their Sixes and Blitz T20 franchise competitions on hold, after their 2017 and 2018 editions.

This came amid financial challenges experienced by Cricket Hong Kong.
