Defending champions Team New Zealand have opened up a two-race lead in the America’s Cup after coming from behind to win a dramatic eighth race in Auckland.

No racing had been possible yesterday due to a lack of wind.

Action resumed today with the score level at 3-3.

Team New Zealand triumphed in the opening race of the day, with rivals Luna Rossa punished for a tactical error.

The Italian challengers made a mistake on the third leg, which allowed Team New Zealand to power clear to triumph in a time of 25min 17sec.

Luna Rossa crossed 58 seconds behind.

The overall score was expected to end level when Team New Zealand erred early in the second race of the day, splashing down when seeking to close a gap to Luna Rossa.

This allowed Luna Rossa to open up a lead of over four minutes on the defending champions.

The Luna Rossa team would splash down themselves later in the race as they fought to find wind, while also receiving boundary penalties.

This enabled a charging Team New Zealand to overtake and win the race in 38:57, with Luna Rossa ultimately ending 3:55 down.

Team New Zealand now have the opportunity to retain their title tomorrow.

The defending champions hold a 5-3 advantage with just five races remaining.

Two races are scheduled to take place tomorrow.
