Slovenia’s Primož Roglič strengthened his position as overall leader of this year’s Paris-Nice with victory in the sixth stage.

The Team Jumbo-Visma rider surged in the last stretch to overpower his rivals as he finished the 202.5 kilometre stage in a winning time of 4hr 40min 22sec.

It was his second victory of the 2021 Paris-Nice following his success in stage four and saw him move further clear of Germany’s defending champion Maximilian Schachmann of Bora-Hansgrohe, leading by 41 seconds with two stages left.

Frenchman Christophe Laporte of Cofidis came second with Australia’s Michael Matthews of Team BikeExchange completing the top three.

Roglič also leap-frogged Ireland’s Sam Bennett of Deceuninck-Quick-Step in the points classification.

"It's cool to win like this," said Roglič.

"It was really hard from the beginning of the day, that's why I was happy at the end."

Organisers have been forced to make changes to the final two stages of the event after a COVID-19 lockdown in Nice led to pressure from the local authorities.

Stage seven, scheduled to take place tomorrow, will start in Le Broc instead of Nice before finishing at Valdeblore La Colmiane, shortening the route from 166.5km to 119.2km.

The race is then set to conclude on March 14 with the 92.7km eighth stage looping around Nice by starting at Le Plan du Var and finishing at Levens.

"I opposed the arrival of Paris-Nice this weekend in a lockdown area," said Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi.

"We all have to be serious."

Asked about the changes, Roglič added: "I have to deal with it.

"The stages are quite short, both of them, and for sure it will be super exciting."
