Russia's Maxim Burov and Australia's Laura Peel have won the men's and women's aerials gold medals at the 2021 International Ski Federation (FIS) Freestyle Ski World Championships in Almaty in Kazakhstan.

In the men's competition, reigning world champion Burov continued his strong 2020-2021 season by successfully defending his title with a score of 135.00 points.

Burov, competing under the flag of the Russian Ski Federation following the sanctions imposed on his country by the World Anti-Doping Agency, has won five of the six aerials World Cup events this season, with the season's title in the bag with one event to go.

The United States' Christopher Lillis was the closest to upsetting the favourite, finishing just 1.50 points behind to win the silver medal.

Burov's team-mate Pavel Krotov claimed the bronze medal, with the top three far ahead of the rest of the field.

Pirmin Werner of Switzerland and Burov's older brother, Ilya, were fourth and fifth.

Peel was crowned the women's champion for a second time, following her victory in 2015 in the discipline.

The World Cup leader scored a total of 106.46 points, finishing 4.72 ahead of America's Ashley Caldwell, the champion from 2017.

Young Russian star Liubov Nikitina claimed the bronze medal, adding to her silver medal from 2019.

Australia's Danielle Scott and Belarus' Hanna Huskova completed the top five; while in-form American Winter Vinecki did not start.

The aerials and moguls events are due to come to a conclusion tomorrow in Almaty with the mixed team aerials event.
