Clyde, the thistle man, was named after Glasgow’s river. He was designed by Beth Gilmour from Cumbernauld, and was chosen from more than 4,000 entries in a UK-wide competition because of his "Scottish symbolism and Glaswegian charm and likeability". Clyde was revealed in a seven-minute animated film at a ceremony at BBC Scotland's headquarters in Glasgow. Due to his popularity, more than 50,000 Clyde plush toys were sold during Glasgow 2014.
