Turin in Italy has bid to hold the Special Olympics World Winter Games a year before Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo welcome the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The candidacy for the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games was presented by the Italian Government, the Piedmont region, the Municipality of Turin, the Italian National Olympic Committee, the Italian Paralympic Committee and Special Olympics Italy President Angelo Moratti.

It has been proposed to hold the event between January 29 and February 9 2025, with the Olympic and Closing Ceremonies set to be held at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, renovated for the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2006.

Around 3,125 athletes and coaches would be expected to attend.

The event would also require the recruitment of 3,000 volunteers.

The Special Olympics World Winter Games is a multi-sport event for athletes with intellectual disabilities that takes place every four years.

Turin has also been working on a bid to host the 2025 Winter World University Games since 2019.

The first edition of the World University Games was held in Turin back in 1959, while the city also hosted the event in 1970.

If the candidatures for both the Special Olympics and World University Games are successful, the competitions would take place in the run up to Milan Cortina 2026, scheduled for February 6 to 22 of that year.

Milan Cortina won the 2026 hosting rights by defeating a Swedish bid from Stockholm Åre by 47 votes to 34 in June 2019.

It means the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games are due to return to Italy for the first time since Turin 2006.

Turin had been part of a three-city bid from Italy before dropping out in September 2018 following a row over the lead city.
