Sweden’s newly-elected International Golf Federation (IGF) President Annika Sörenstam is set to compete in her first tour event in 13 years when the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Gainbridge Championship begins tomorrow in Florida.

The 10-time Major winner announced she was stepping away from the sport in 2008 to start a family.

Sörenstam unofficially returned to the LPGA last month when she played at the Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions, where she competed in the celebrity division.

Sörenstam, who became IGF President last December when she replaced Peter Dawson, confirmed her participation at her local course in Florida earlier this month.

She told the LGPA that the participating at the US Senior Women’s Open will be her goal for the season.

"A lot has changed for the better during that time, most notably the birth of our two children," Sörenstam said.

"Ava and Will are excited to see ‘Mama’ play.

"I have to admit if this tournament hadn’t moved to our home course, it never would have crossed my mind to enter.

"But it makes sense to do so, not just because it will be a ‘home game,’ but also because my goal, schedule permitting, is to play in the US Senior Women’s Open later this summer.

"To work toward that goal, I have realised that I need more tournament reps to have a chance to reach my potential.

"I’m not expecting much, but I look forward to the challenge."

Sörenstam, who is 50, claimed 72 Ladies Professional Golf Association titles during her career, including 10 majors.

The Swede won the ANA Inspiration, Women’s PGA Championship and US Women’s Open on three occasions as well as the Women’s British Open.

Sörenstam was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom last month.

She faced criticism after receiving the honour from former US President Donald Trump, which came just hours after US Capitol was stormed.

The LPGA Gainbridge Championship will begin tomorrow at the Lake Nona Golf and Country Club.
