Walid Ktila held off home favourite Mohammed Al Hammadi to win the men's 100 metres T34 at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai.

Tunisia's Ktila, a three-time Paralympic champion in sprint distances, crossed the line at the Dubai Club for People of Determination in 14.98 secs.

He bested long-time rival and multiple world and Paralympic medallist Al Hammadi, who finished in 15.97.

Mohammed Yousef Othman clinched another medal for the United Arab Emirates after placing third in 16.26.

"I am not very happy with my performance today, though my body feels good to finally compete after a long time," Al Hammadi said.

"And this track is special to me as I have won three medals at the Dubai 2019 World Championships.

"The year 2020 had been very difficult for athletes to not train and sit at home.

"Thankfully, Dubai started the Para-athletics season and it is important for us to perform in our home Championships."

Ktila and Al Hammadi will meet again in the men's 800m T34.

Noura Alktebi grabbed a second silver medal for the hosts in the women's shot put F32.

She threw 5.07 metres, finishing in front of compatriot Thekra Alkaabi with 4.35m.

Algeria's Mounia Gasmi won the contest after managing a throw of 5.71m.

Two regional records were set during today's competition, with Morocco’s Aissa Bentaleb setting an African record of 4mins 12.18secs in the men's 1500m T37.

Redouane Hennouni-Bouzidi of France ran 4:07.11 in the men's 1500m T38 to achieve a European record.

Competition is scheduled to continue in Dubai tomorrow.
