The European University Sports Association (EUSA) Executive Committee discussed the upcoming European Universities Games during its first virtual meeting of 2021.

This year's European Universities Games are scheduled to run from July 14 to 27 in the Serbian capital Belgrade, having been postponed from last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A report was given on the competition’s registration status, before plans for COVID-19 protocols at the event were presented.

A Supervision Commission meeting is set to take place in Belgrade later this month, ahead of an online meeting with the EUSA's National University Sports Associations in March.

The Executive Committee heard reports on the inaugural European Universities Cycling Championships, taking place in Nijmegen in The Netherlands this June, and next year’s European Universities Games in Łódź in Poland.

A final update was also given on the EUSA Awards Ceremony on Thursday (February 11).

The virtual ceremony is set to be a celebration of European university sports, reflecting on both EUSA and International University Sports Federation (FISU) events, while also awarding outstanding individuals, universities and associations for their achievements and contribution to university sport.

The Executive Committee also approved funding for selected developing members in 2021.

Twenty-one sports, including beach handball, beach volleyball, chess, taekwondo and Para-table tennis, are set to be contested at the fifth European Universities Games this year.

Sitting volleyball will additionally be a demonstration sport.

The EUSA claims more than 5,000 student-athletes from in excess of 400 universities are set to take part, with teams from at least 354 universities and other academic institutions from 40 countries already registered.
