Spaniard Alberto Fernández and Russian Iuliia Saveleva topped the standings on the first day of the trap qualification competitions at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Grand Prix in Rabat.

Fernández, a three-time world champion, missed just one target in the opening two rounds before hitting all 25 in the third to finish the day with a score of 73 in the Moroccan city.

Alessandro Ferreira de Souza of Peru also ended with a perfect round to edge out Russia’s Kirill Bagrov into third.

The duo were among five shooters who finished on 72 as Spain’s Antonio Bailon, Egypt’s Ahmed Zaher and Russia’s Maxim Kabatskiy completed the top six.

Saveleva prevailed on day one of the women’s trap qualifier as she totalled 71 after rounds of 24, 23 and 24.

Spain’s Mar Molné Magriñà clinched second on countback after she and compatriot Cristina Beltrán both finished on 70 with the same scores in each round.

Fátima Gálvez hit all 25 targets in the third round but this was not enough to sneak into the top three as she finished fourth on 69.

Beatriz Martínez scored 23 in all three rounds to become the fourth Spaniard in the top six as she came sixth behind Polina Kniazeva of Russia who recovered from a round of 21 to score 25 and 23 in the next two.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow with further trap qualification rounds before the women’s and men’s trap finals.

The action is expected to conclude on February 5 with a trap mixed team event.

The ISSF say the Grand Prix is the governing body’s first official competition on the African continent in several years.
