The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) is set to give funding to 50 sports clubs as part of an annual initiative rewarding exceptional youth work.

Successful applicants will receive a trophy and a prize of €5,000 (£4,400/$6,100) as part of the "Green Belt for exemplary promotion of talent in clubs" scheme, which has been running for 35 years.

Clubs or club departments can apply through their Olympic or non-Olympic national governing bodies until March 31, with a jury of renowned sports experts then selecting the 50 winning clubs.

The DOSB has worked with Commerzbank, which provides sponsorship to the award, to develop the initiative since it was first introduced in 1986.

The DOSB noted that the 2020 season was significantly restricted in 2020 because of COVID-19 pandemic, recognising that club life was limited due to social restrictions.

It also thanked those who worked hard to continue providing opportunities and support for young athletes.

Head of brand management at Commerzbank and member of the jury Uwe Hellmann added that the past year has been difficult for sport.

"Supporting the sports clubs in their commitment to young talent in competitive and popular sports in Germany has always been important to us and is now perhaps more important than ever," Hellmann said.

"Behind all the award winners and their sporting success there are an infinite number of hours of volunteer work and sporting endurance.

"At the same time, we repeatedly see brave clubs that dare to take new paths in promoting young talent.

"We would like to appreciate the commitment and further motivate the clubs."
