Two-time Commonwealth Games boxing gold medallist David Nyika will make his professional debut next month as he prepares to compete at the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The 25-year-old will face Jesse Maio in an all-New Zealand bout next month.

The fight will feature on the Joseph Parker and Junior Fa card at Spark Arena on February 27.

Nyika has said the fight will form part of his preparation for the Olympic Games, which were postponed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Nyika is already assured of his place at the Games, having advanced through from the Asia-Oceania Olympic qualifier last year.

"It kind of made sense to take this opportunity and basically get more competition here in New Zealand," Nyika told Radio New Zealand.

"The chances are the travel restrictions are going to cripple us, so getting a bit more variety is key for me and just getting as much experience as I can leading up to the Olympics.

"I've had 94 fights to date and I'd really like to get to 100 before the Olympics, but that's unlikely unless I make it through to a gold medal match, which would be nice.

"I've finished my apprenticeship in boxing and now it's time to start cashing-in.

"I've been a full-time amateur boxer for the last six years now and it hasn't really got me anywhere financially, so I need to start making some moves and maybe looking abroad to see what opportunities there are overseas as well."

Nyika will make his professional debut in the cruiserweight division.

He is due to contest the men’s heavyweight division at Tokyo 2020, where he would become the first male New Zealand boxer to compete at the Olympics since Athens 2004.

Nyika has enjoyed success at the Commonwealth Games, winning light heavyweight gold at Glasgow 2014.

He secured gold four years later in the heavyweight division at Gold Coast 2018.
