Marta Bassino edged out Tessa Worley to win her third giant slalom race of the season as the International Ski Federation (FIS) women's Alpine Ski World Cup circuit visited Kranjska Gora.

The Italian's first-run time of 1min 04.15sec was the fastest of the day at the Slovenia resort.

Worley's 1:07.70 was the best in run two, but Bassino was only 0.05sec slower than the French skier.

That left Bassino with an overall advantage of 0.80, while Michelle Gisin was 1.46 back in third.

Slovakia's Petra Vlhová, the overall FIS Alpine Ski World Cup leader, finished fourth, meaning Switzerland's Gisin marginally cut Vlhová's lead to 114 points.

Federica Brignone, last season's World Cup winner, was fifth, and American Mikaela Shiffrin sixth in icy conditions.

Bassino had only won one World Cup race before this season, but now has three giant slalom victories this campaign and leads the race for the crystal globe in the discipline.

Fellow Italian Brignone is Bassino's closest rival, on 250 points to her 300.

A second giant slalom race is scheduled tomorrow, before the circuit heads to Crans-Montana in Switzerland if the health situation allows.

Men's Alpine Ski World Cup races in Wengen were cancelled because of a COVID-19 outbreak this week and moved to Austria.
