The former chair of the Netball Association of Tanzania (CHANETA), Anna Bayi, has died after contracting pneumonia.

Bayi was married to Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) secretary general Filbert Bayi, one of Tanzania's two Olympic medallists.

He told Tanzanian publication The Guardian that Bayi died on Wednesday (December 6) following a short illness, and was buried today in Kibaha Mkuza.

During Bayi's time as CHANETA chair, Tanzania reached 10th in the International Netball Federation (INF) rankings, making them the third-best African nation at one point.

She served as chair from 2009 to 2013, in which time Tanzania hosted the Africa Netball Cup tournament.

Bayi has been credited with strengthening netball in Tanzania, and in particular cooperation between Zanzibar and the mainland.

Bayi's successor as CHANETA chair, Anna Kirbira, died last year.

Tanzania does not currently appear on the INF rankings.

Bayi was also a director for Filbert Bayi Schools.

Bayi's husband, Filbert, won 1500m gold at the Christchurch 1974 Commonwealth Games and silver at Edmonton 1978.

At the Moscow 1980 Olympics, he took silver in the 3,000m steeplechase.
