The National Olympic Committee of Tajikistan (NOCT) has agreed to financially support 15 athletes in their bid to qualify for this year’s rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The pledge was made at the recent NOCT General Assembly which was held in the capital Dushanbe under the chairmanship of vice-presidents Shamsullo Sohibov and Abdullozoda Ahtam.

So far, Tajikistan has secured two Olympic berths with boxers Bakhodur Usmonov and Shabbos Negmatulloev set to compete in the men’s lightweight division and men's light heavyweight class respectively.

The duo secured their places after success at the Asia and Oceania Olympic qualification tournament in Amman in Jordan last March.

As part of the Beijing 2022 Athletes’ Financial Support Programme running from November 2019 to February 2022, skiers Saifiddin Nizomiddin and Goibov Bakhriddin are set to receive $1,500 (£1,108/€1,224) a month to help qualify for next year’s Winter Olympics.

It was also agreed at the meeting that NOCT President Emomali Rahmon will establish an Olympic Fund in 2021.

Members reflected on a year that saw a number of notable developments for NOCT despite the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to NOCT, three competitions involving around 200 athletes were held by the archery and national federations.

NOCT said it also staged six training sessions on gender equality and five training seminars for officials, coaches and judges.

With funding from the International Olympic Committee, a boarding school for athletes was repaired in Dushanbe, while financial support from the Olympic Council of Asia led to the building of a modern sports ground in the Rasht District.

As part of the Sports Programme for Social Development held on March 14 in cooperation with the Committee for Youth and Sports, more than 143,000 people took part in cycling marathons and races.

A total of 53 veterans and notable athletes were handed awards by NOCT to mark Olympic Day which saw almost 145,000 take part in events on June 23.

More than 5,600 people participated in chess, athletics and wrestling competitions as well as morning exercises as a result of the Sport for All campaign.

NOCT said it also received $25,000 (£18,424/€20,368) from the Association of National Olympic Committees and Olympic Solidarity to help in the fight against COVID-19, with the funds used to purchase sports equipment and send athletes to international competitions.

Tajikistan has won four Olympic medals in its history with wrestler Yusup Abdusalomov winning silver and Rasul Boqiev claiming bronze at Beijing 2008, boxer Mavzuna Chorieva earning bronze at London 2012 and hammer thrower Dilshod Nazarov securing an historic gold at Rio 2016.

Nazarov was among seven athletes from Tajikistan that competed at the Games five years ago.
