Canada and Finland each made it two wins from two at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship at Rogers Place in Edmonton, with victories over Slovakia and Switzerland respectively.

Hosts Canada played Slovakia after both sides had won their opening match, and another thrashing was not on the cards.

Canada defeated Germany 16-2 the previous day, but found it more difficult to break down a resilient Slovakian side, coming out 3-1 victors in the end.

Jordan Spence opened the scoring for the reigning champions a little more than four minutes into the match, but no more goals would come until the final period, when Philip Tomasino doubled Canada's lead.

Taking advantage of a Canadian penalty and bringing out their goalie, Slovakia got one back thanks to Martin Chromiak, but Jack Quinn put the game to rest in the final seconds to give Canada a 3-1 victory.

The reigning champions continue to sit top of Group A and are joined on six points by Finland, who continued their unbeaten start with a 4-1 victory over Switzerland.

Attilio Biasca ensured Switzerland started well, scoring the opener within four minutes, but Finland responded 34 seconds later with Anton Lundell equalsing.

Juuso Parssinen gave Finland the lead in the second period, while Aku Raty and Kasper Simontaival ensured a Finnish victory with goals in the third period.

Slovakia are third in the group on three points and Switzerland and Germany are yet to win a match yet.

The only match in Group B on day three was between the Czech Republic and Russia, with the Czechs recording their first win of the tournament.

The Czech Republic won 2-0 after goals from Filip Koffer and Martin Lang in the second and third periods respectively.

This means that the United States, Russia and the Czech Republic have all won one match and lost one in Group B, and sit behind Sweden who have won their only match so far.

Austria, who were thrashed by the US 11-0 on day two, have played just one match and sit bottom of the group.

Austria face Sweden on day four and the US play the Czech Republic in the other Group B fixture, while Slovakia will look for a second win in their match against Germany.
