France's decathlon world record holder Kevin Mayer has secured the qualification standard for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after two days of competition at the Meeting de la Réunion.

Taking place on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean, Mayer surpassed the points total of 8350 needed to be eligible for selection for the Games in 2021.

Tokyo 2020 was postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8 2021.

His total of 8552 is the new world lead in the restricted 2020 season.

Mayer finished a large margin ahead of Estonia's Taavi Tsernjavski, finishing on a total of 8030, while Tsernjavski's compatriot Risto Lillemets finished third with a total of 7993.

French pair Axel Hubert and Makenson Gletty were fourth and fifth.

Mayer won the 110 metres hurdles, javelin throw and discus throw on day two to secure qualification.

Belgium's Benjamin Hougardy won the pole vault, finishing sixth overall while France's Gael Querin finished eighth after winning the 1500m.

Colombia's Evelis Aguilar had a strong second day to win the women's heptathlon with a score of 6055, meaning no athletes met the qualifying standard of 6420 for Tokyo 2020.

Estonia's Mari Klaup and Austria's Sarah Lagger were close behind with totals of 6014 and 6010 in second and third.

Yesterday's leader Cassandre Aguessy Thomas of France, could only finish in fifth place after a difficult second day, while Ukraine's Hanna Kasyanova finished fourth.

France's Diane Marie-Hardy won the final race of the day in the 800m, ending in sixth.

Earlier in the day, Klaup won the javelin throw and Aguilar took charge at the top of the standings after winning the long jump.
